Date: 29/4/2016

31 properties under Urban Group signed up for the Charter on External Lighting launched by the Environment Bureau on 1st April, 2016, pledging to switch off unnecessary external lighting at night to reduce light nuisance with the aim to save energy and provide a better living environment for the people of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has countless advertisement billboards and outdoor lighting decorations, which lead to energy waste and light nuisance, and bring serious impact to the residents’ quality of life. In view of this, the Environment Bureau has launched the first-ever Charter on External Lighting (“the Charter”), and invited owners and responsible persons to switch off decorative, promotional or advertising lighting installations from 11 pm or midnight to 7 am on the following day.

Dr Edmond Cheng, Managing Director of Urban Group said, “Urban Group is honoured to have received 31 Platinum Awards and Gold Awards in the Charter on External Lighting.  We are committed to shoulder our corporate social responsibilities by supporting environmental protection initiatives.  We have 31 properties signed the Charter this year, pledged to reduce light nuisance and energy waste, enabling residents of the city a better evnironment for resting.”

The Signing Ceremony of the Charter was held on 1st April, 2016 and was officiated by Mr Wong Kam-sing, JP, Secretary for the Environment of the HKSAR Government and Ms Mak Sui-king, Caroline, Chairperson of the Working Group on the Promotion of the Charter on External Lighting.  The Charter took effect on the same day, which was supported by over 4,000 properties and shops which pledged to switch off unnecessary external lighting.  Signatories to the Charter include property developers, building management companies, hotels, catering and retail outlets, banks, cinemas, schools, as well as public utilities and public/non-governmental organisations.

Dr Cheng continued, “We hope to encourage more property owners to participate in the Charter to urge retailers to switch off unnecessary external lighting in order to alleviate light pollution and save energy. Let us join hands to build a better living environment for the community.”
