10 properties under Urban Group’s management recently received the FoodEver WasteNever Awards in recognition of their efforts in reducing food waste disposal and encouraging their stakeholders to treasure food resources.
Dr Edmond Cheng, Managing Director of Urban Group said, “In Hong Kong, 3,600 tonnes of food waste is created each day and they make up 40% of total solid waste. Proper management of the food waste can considerably reduce the amount but it requires everyone’s support at each step along the way.”
Urban Group is currently managing around 125,000 residential units. “We can act as a bridge and support the government to promote reduction of food waste. To put this into practice, we organize educational activities to appeal to the residents to change their habits and treasure natural resources. Recycling the food scraps is another way, and some properties have installed composting machines to produce fertilizer for planting,” Dr Edmond Cheng added.
The FoodEver WasteNever Programme, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Association and the Hong Kong Productivity Council, aims to encourage the community to join forces to reduce food waste. It is designed to provide a platform to motivate the community to take action for food waste reduction. Through educational campaigns and community engagement initiatives, the Programme recognises over 300 Hong Kong entities as showcases for effective food waste management.
