Urban Group and its 168 properties support Earth Hour 2017

Date: 31/5/2017

Urban Group and 168 properties under its management supported the Earth Hour 2017 Campaign by switching off non-essential lights and office electronic appliances to support the Earth Hour’s annual appeal on reducing electricity consumption.

Earth Hour was initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (“WWF”) in 2007 in Australia and developed into a global activity in 2008. The campaign aims at encouraging people to think about changing their lifestyles to reduce the impact on the environment. By turning off the unnecessary lights during the Earth Hour, it symbolises the reduction of energy consumption by giving up environmental unfriendly practices of our lifestyles.
Dr Edmond Cheng, Managing Director of Urban Group said, “Urban Group is a long term supporter of this meaningful exercise. We always infuse environmental protection elements into our management planning and daily operations. We pledge to support the Earth Hour Campaign is our commitment to join hands with international organizations to combat climate change and contribute to establish a sustainable environment.”

Urban Group has acquired the ISO14001 Certification since 2003. The Group adopts different measures to reduce energy consumption in their daily operations and has been awarded the Hong Kong Green Mark since 2008 in recognition for its achievements in environmental management.

“It is stunning to notice that Hong Kong broke 12 weather related records in 2016, ranging from the highest consecutive number of hot days to the most rainfall recorded in autumn. All of us should step in and bear our responsibility. Reducing energy consumption and carbon emission are the most prominent ways to combat climate change.” said Dr Edmond Cheng. “The 168 properties under our management which participated in the Earth Hour, include residential estates, commercial buildings, government facilities and educational institutions. We hope our support could influence the other stakeholders to take up their social responsibility and engage more support from the society to protect the environment.”
