Urban Group joins Friends of EcoPark

Date: 3/1/2017

Urban Group, its associated company and 8 properties under its management received certificates in the 6th Friends of EcoPark Award Presentation Ceremony held on 1 November 2016, as a recognition of their contributions to the betterment of the environment through waste reduction, recycling and environmental caring.
The Friends of EcoPark Award aims to encourage collaboration between the tenants of EcoPark and the private/public organisations. The number of supporting companies and organisations has been growing steadily since its launch in 2010. This year 119 organisations received this recognition.

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, GBS, JP, pointed out during the ceremony that, in order to fulfill the Hong Kong Blueprint for Sustainable Use of Resources which aims to reduce 40% of waste disposal at landfill sites within 10 years, the Environmental Protection Department has launched 5 strategic approaches simultaneously. Reducing waste at source will be significantly effective with the upcoming Producer Responsibility Schemes, after the expansion of the Environmental Levy Scheme on Plastic Shopping Bags.

Whereas recycling also plays a vital part. Hugh effort is still required to promote converting waste materials to reusable resources. The Friends of EcoPark campaign can help bring the recycling concept to a noticeable level to the general public and the private sector.
Dr Edmond Cheng, Managing Director of Urban Group said, “We believe that environmental protection is a joint effort among the government, recycling organisations and the general public. This is the first time for our Group and the properties under our management to be awarded as the Friends of EcoPark. We will continue to promote the scheme to the 367 properties under our management, deepening the public’s understanding to waste reduction and recycling.”

“Green practices have been carrying out in Urban Group to encourage our staff to take a further step to reduce waste. Our frontline staff are given the company’s eco-bags and bottles as a gift. Other green activities such as used books exchange scheme, regulated indoor temperatures, have also been promoted. On the customer side, green educational activities such as barter events, power saving seminars, sales of used books for charitable purposes, use of composting machine for recycling food scraps are regularly organised.” Dr Cheng added.
