Urban Group fully supports the Job Shadowing Programme Offering high school students to experience office life

Date: 21/4/2015

The Kwun Tong District Social Welfare Office of the Social Welfare Department in conjunction with the Hong Kong Christian Service Kwun Tong Happy Teens Club re-launch the Job Shadowing Programme in 2015.  This Programme provides opportunities for the youth to understand the commercial world which is hardly embraced in their textbooks and inspires them to prepare for their career development.

In the Launching Ceremony held in February 2015, Urban Group represented the business community to share their experiences in this Programme and introduced various job opportunities in the property and facilities management industry.  Attendees were upper form students from different secondary schools.

Ms Janna Cheng, Senior Group Manager - Human Capital of Urban Group said, “This is the second time we participate in this programme.  We have invited 7 students this year to work in Urban Group to experience our working environment.  I also arranged some of my colleagues to share their working experiences with them and we could tell from the students’ response that real-life workplace examples are appealing.”

Dr Edmond Cheng, Managing Director of Urban Group said: "Urban Group's business scope includes property and facilities management.  We offer a wide range of job opportunities - the frontline works include security, property maintenance, gardening, customer service, as well as lifeguard service, clubhouse management and professional property and facilities management.  In addition, there is a strong team of administrative staff supporting our frontline team.”

“The property and facilities management industry has evolved into different professional services.  For Urban Group, it is necessary to upgrade our technologies and continue to create new services in order to exceed customer expectations.  We are required to obtain different professional qualifications in order to meet the changing demands,” Dr Cheng continued.

The target group of the Job Shadowing Programme is mainly F.4 and F.5 students studying in the secondary schools.  This Programme has another purpose of creating opportunities for the corporate managers to participate in voluntary works in their workplace, to let them share their experiences with the young people and become their role models.

Mentorship is established through pairing up the youth in the programme with the professionals, corporate executives, and SME owners.  This allows the young people, under the guidance of business leaders, to widen their horizons from the textbooks.  This platform gives the young people a preliminary understanding of business operations, and optimistically they could be inspired and able to formulate their life plan.

Dr Cheng further added, “Apart from residential and commercial buildings, our facilities management services have been extended to university campus and facilities, environmental and technology facilities, and regional shopping malls.  I believe the students should be able to experience a certain level of practical and hands-on knowledge about the property and facilities management field.”

Lam Shuk Man, a student who joined the Programme and had her practice in Urban Group last year, wrote down her experience in the logbook, “My mentor is always calm and wise in my eyes.  It seems nothing can exhaust her.  This is because my mentor has been widening her horizons and expanding her social networks since she was young.  With a wealth of experience and knowledge, she is able to overcome during difficult moments.  On the other hand, her independent and decisive personality enables her to acquire fruitful opportunities.”
