29 Regional Offices under Urban Group awarded
"Hong Kong Leading SME Smoke Free Workplace Award 2006"

29 Regional Offices under Urban Group received the "Hong Kong Leading SME Smoke Free Workplace Award 2006" jointly organized by the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health and Radio Television Hong Kong (Radio 1), recognizing the achievements of Urban in implementing smoke free policies to protect the health of its staff.

Over 170 SMEs were awarded in the campaign this year. Judging criteria of the Award include the implementation of smoke free workplace policies; the promotions of smoke free workplace; and the support for staff to strive for a smoke free culture. The Award recognizes the outstanding SMEs in pioneering smoke free policies in the workplace.

Dr York Chow, SBS, JP, Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Bureau, Guest of Honour of the Award Presentation Ceremony said that it was a demonstration of best practices for employer to provide a healthy workplace for its workers to maintain the continuity of the enterprise. He hoped that more and more business enterprises would voluntarily implement smoking ban in the workplace to protect their staff from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and to create a positive role model in the society.

Dr Edmond Cheng, Managing Director of Urban Group revealed, "Urban Group has been implementing a Non-smoking Policy since 1995. The policy has been extended to all regional offices under the Group in 1999. All staff are not allowed to smoke within the workplace as well as in all company vehicles. Moreover, all visitors to the Group are encouraged to comply with the non-smoking policy of the company at all times. The Group disseminates information to all staff on topics such as the benefits of a smoke free workplace and the harmful effects of secondhand smoke so as to create a healthy and fresh environment for all staff."
